Online marketing, also identified as digital marketing or internet marketing, involves promoting services and good on the internet, display adverts, mobile phones and other digital technologies. Online marketing is as old as the internet itself, tracing its roots to the early 1990s when companies and brands started marketing themselves on the internet. Digital marketing changed how sellers and buyers associated. Previously, you had to see on TV or billboard then go to your preferred store to buy the product, if interested. As the internet advanced, digital marketing grew as well to introduce more modern techniques such as search engine optimization (SEO), content marketing, influencer marketing, social media marketing, e-mail direct marketing among others.
But how exactly does online marketing work? It depends on the technique of online marketing you choose to use. Take the case of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for example. The primary goal of SEO is to make a website rank higher than other pages in the search engines results. To realize the rankings, SEO tools lets you set target keywords that conform to queries that a search engine user may type in the search box. The keywords you choose need to revolve around some aspects of your business enshrined in your website. Therefore, when a guest makes a Google search of something like “The best car hire dealers under $200” while in Paris, the website of your car hire company (based in Paris) come first on the result list depending on the closeness of your keywords and the phrase the guest/tourist typed in the search engine.
